The Avro Lancaster I LL914 was a British bomber of the 9th Squadron of the Royal Air Force. On September 23, 1944, it departed at 19:02 from Bardney, United Kingdom, for a raid on Münster-Handorf Airfield in Germany. On its way back, it was shot down by Leutnant Theodor Adamski, a German night fighter pilot from 8./NJG 1, flying a Messerschmitt Bf 110 G-4.
The Lancaster crashed near Smeijersdijk, Zuna, Overijssel, Netherlands. Tragically, all seven crew members lost their lives. Their names and places of remembrance are as follows:
- P/O William Begg (Pilot) – Runnymede Memorial, United Kingdom
- F/Sgt Harold Herbert Joseph Bromley (Navigator) – Runnymede Memorial, United Kingdom
- Sgt Eric Haskins (Flight Engineer) – Runnymede Memorial, United Kingdom
- P/O Timothy Ambrose Harrington (Bomb Aimer) – Wierden General Cemetery, Netherlands
- Sgt James Moreton (Radio Operator) – Runnymede Memorial, United Kingdom
- Sgt Archibald Donald Jones (Mid-Upper Gunner) – Wierden General Cemetery, Netherlands
- Sgt Frederick Wilcock (Rear Gunner) – Wierden General Cemetery, Netherlands
In 2006, the wreckage of the Lancaster was recovered, and remains of four crew members were discovered. On August 18, 2008, they were laid to rest at the cemetery in Wierden. In honor of the crew, a memorial was established at the cemetery.
